WINGS FOR LIFE: SIGI IS PART OF THE MOVEMENT

“Running for those, who can’t” – the 3rd May 2015 was an incredible day, in the second year of the solidary race called “Wings for Life World Run”. Also for professional snowboarder Sigi Grabner: “Last year I did 35,85 km in Barcelona’s World Run, this year the idea was to take part in the movement. I had a lot of fun being pacemaker for some friends who took part for the first time in their life in a running event. We chose the World Run in Aranjuez, Spain. It was an incredible location”, told Sigi.

From solidary walkers, hobby joggers up to world elite runners: The WingsForLife World Run is a true spectacle. More than 101,280 participants worldwide on 35 locations at the same time took part and pushed themselves beyond their limit for a good cause. 100% of the entry fees of this event go to the Wings-for-Life Foundation, who supports scientific research of curing spinal cord injury. Sigi: “With my participation in the Wings for Life World Run I support the movement – I run for those who can’t!”

KREISCHBERG: SIGI IS BACK!

Sigi Grabner and Kreischberg – think gold! 12 years ago he won the Gold medal in the World Championships here. Now Sigi is back in Kreischberg, the location which hosts the First Ever FIS Snowboard & Ski Freestyle World Championships (Jan 14 to Jan 23 2015). Sigi Grabner in a new role: He is acting as a TV-expert for the Austrian TV, analysing the performance of his former racing colleagues. “I am more nervous to just watch them racing. The duels are thrilling, we see great carving and a big show!”

SIGI COMMENTS THE SNOWBOARD EVENTS ON AUSTRIAN TV

Sigi Grabner is back! Acting as a commentator for the Austrian Television Channel ORF he will follow the snowboard events 2014/15 in Austria – Montafon PSL, Bad Gastein PSL and the World Championships in Kreischberg. Sigi: “This is something very new and very exciting! I will see the races from another point of view and I really look forward to this new challenge!”

SIGI GRABNER – LORD OF THE RING

Sigi Grabner receives the City of Lienz Ring of Honor for achievements in sports.

Sigi Grabner has written his life story around snowboarding: 20 years of successful racing ranked in the world’s top 10 list (winner ISF World ProTour, FIS World Champion, two-fold winner oft he FIS Overall World Cup). A real sports legend and role model of our time, who sponsors today’s young and talented snowboarders.

Together with his SG PRO TEAM, a hand picked bunch of world-class riders Sigi has been developing high-class snowboarding equipment that reflects his passion for this sport. SG SNOWBOARDS are expertly handcrafted in Fürnitz/Austria and distributed from Lienz/East Tyrol. In Acknowledgement of his great work the Mayor of Lienz, Elisabeth Blanik, has honored Sigi Grabner with the Ring of Honour oft he City of Lienz.

SIGI ACHIEVES 35,85 KM AT THE WORLD RUN BARCELONA

“Running for those who can’t!” 35.397 runners started under this credo in 34 locations around the world at the same time. They tried to get as far as possible, before they were finally overtaken by the “Catcher Car”, which ended their race at the “Wings for Life World Run”.  Among them was Sigi Grabner, Snowboard-Icon and founder of SG Snowboards.

With the starting number 511 Sigi managed in Barcelona 35.85 kilometers before he was stopped by the Catcher Car. He celebrates a personal goal: “I wanted to run a half-marathon and could even make 14 kilometers more. That’s great! I am very happy and glad for being part of the Wings for Life World Run.”

In the end winner of this run were not only the runners but especially those who can’t!
3.000.000 € of the proceeds from the event will go to the Wings for Life foundation, which funds research into curing spinal cord injury.

SIGI GRABNER UNITES 4 SNOWBOARD GENERATIONS

Snowboarders from four different generations followed Sigi Grabner’s invitation: A “Snowboarding Allstars After-Career-Weekend”! Last weekend from 11th to 13th April they spend time together at the Nassfeld in Carinthia, Austria. More than 50 companions from Sigi’s 20-year racing career came together for snowboarding and celebrating. Eight countries were represented: Austria, Japan, Germany, Norway, USA, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. Stars from the days of the ISF, Lords of the Boards, World Champions, World Cup winner, they all came: the Olympic medalist in Nagano in 1998 just aswell as the World Cup overall champion of 2014.

A bit of history

So you saw snowboard history on the Nassfeld: Riders of the first hour as Gerry Ring, Hans Rösch, Karl-Heinz Zangerl, Helmut Pramstaller and Gitti Köck as Nici Pederzolli, Dieter Krassnig, Stefan Kaltschütz and Felix Stadler, Alex Maier, SBX Overall World Cup Winner Alex Koller, Claudia Riegler, freeriders like Ueli Kestenholz from Switzerland. But the young team colleagues from the Austrian National Team and active international stars of the race board scene had accepted the invitation aswell: World Cup Title Winner Lukas Mathies, Ina Meschik, Sabine Schöffmann, Andreas Lausegger, the South Tyrolean Aaron March, the World Champion from 2011 Hilde-Katrine Engeli (NOR ) and the Vice World Champion of 2013, Justin Reiter (USA).

“I thank my long-time sponsor who has made it possible for me to meet these old companions and friends – from Joe Zangerl, my first coach to Andy Lausegger, my last roommate – to experience such a weekend here in Carinthia. When I look around, I see twenty years of snowboard history in one place,” said Grabner, “it is unbelievably great! What could be better than snowboarding and celebrating together with so many good snowboarders, good friends and good enemies. That’s what it’s all about!” Sigi Grabner said.

SIGI RUNS FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T

On 4th May 2014 snowboard icon Sigi Grabner exchanges his SG Snowboard against running shoes. He starts at 12 o’clock at the charity event Wings for Life World Run in Barcelona.

“In the last years I suffered a few lengthy injuries. Fortunately, everything is healed well now and I can start running after a 4-year break. Running is a sport that I’ve done since my childhood. I enjoy running much more than I did before. Now I have an idea what it means if you are not able to run,” told Sigi.

The Wings for Life World Run is an entirely new type of event never seen before or undertaken in either running or any other sporting field. It is a global adventure, encompassing up to forty locations, in which everyone runs at the very same time all over the world! 100% of the proceeds from the event will go to the Wings for Life foundation, which funds research into curing spinal cord injury. “With my participation at the Wings for Life World Run I would like to support the research for the cure of spinal cord injuries. I run for those who can’t!”

The run will unite athletes around the world, in one race running for those who can’t!
